Standard K&B Duct is perfect for all such applications without any special considerations. Generally these products DO NOT require any consideration to heavy gauge material. General installation instructions apply.
Strands/Stringy Material- Paper Trim, Fibers, etc
Tag Free- Most standard K&B Duct parts are perfect for all such applications with the only consideration being the need for interior buffing to remove all potential for the tagging or hanging of material. At your notification/request, we will grind, sand and buff all interior welds and seams and test with a nylon rag to make sure that the material will flow smoothly. When duct is cut in the field for use with an adjustable sleeve, the installer must give special care to de-burr and smooth the end of the duct and then to make sure the duct is installed in the direction of the air flow.
Wet Mist- oil, water, steam
Gaskets- The Forever Clamp provides a tight seal around the rolled lips- so tight that additional gasket material is not needed to complete the seal. However in the case of oil mist, attention must be given to the properties of the oil being used and its affect on the standard n-butyl gasket material.Generally speaking the n-butyl works well for conventional affluents. New sulfur and phosphorus based affluents are more acidic and can demand the use of Viton or Goretex as an overlay for the gasket. These affluents are generally recognized by their obnoxious smell but contact the supplier for verification.
Installation- Adjustable sleeves are used as usual. With wet applications, the sleeves must be installed relative to the ‘drainage’ of the captured material when the system is off. This may mean (especially in the drops) that the sleeves are installed against the air flow.
Sealing- K&B duct is extremely tight. Branches are welded to the tapers and all spot welded parts are sealed with chemical resistant caulks. If notified of special situations, we will apply an epoxy caulk as an alternative to ALL seams. This GUARANTEES that no seams will leak.
Fumes/Welding Smoke- non toxic
Condensation- As with wet applications, attention should be paid to the condensate within the duct. If the fume or smoke can distill in the duct and run, install the adjustable sleeves in the direction of material flow. In the drops this may be against the air flow.
Food
Cleanliness -Because of the ease of removal and the requirement for frequent clean-outs, many in the food industry have found K&B Duct to be a preferred solution over the flanged and welded duct/tube. It must be noted that K&B Duct (as with any ‘duct’) has bug harbors. The harbors can be reduced with the use of sealants (primarily FDA approved silicon) but they can not be eliminated. Additionally, tubed elbows and full welded fittings can help reduce the potential for harbors. Of course, SS (304 or 316) is also recommended.
Chemicals
Corrosive applications- K&B Duct is available in galvanized, SS (304, 316, etc) and carbon steel for painting. As with any duct transporting corrosive chemicals, the duct should always be operated under negative air pressure.
Abrasive Material
Wear- Most products are not nearly as abrasive as suspected. This idea is after the result of previous wear of duct that was too light to begin with. If the system is designed correctly with correct velocities to keep the material air borne, wear does not occur in the straight duct. All K&B fittings (branches, transitions, reducers etc) are 18 ga. Elbows are of various gauge and ANY radius. These can be selected from the catalog. IF, heavier gauges ARE NEEDED, the duct can be supplied in gauges up to 10 ga. In these applications the rolled lip is formed on a separate piece of metal and then affixed to the heavier duct. See the catalog for more information.
